USA by campervan from west to east coast
9 September 2009-24 October 2017
This was a fast paced trip from San Francisco to New york city, via the Canadian border in the north to New Orleans in the south - 12,000 kms in 6 weeks.
We hired a self-contained 20' campervan instead of a full motorhome for its fuel economy, ease of maneuvering in cities & lower height to allow clearance through a couple of tunnels on our proposed route. We booked it through Backpack Dave (California) who got us a very cheap deal on a new Apollo van.
Apart from the van we only prebooked our 1st night's accommodation in San Fran as we free camped almost every night - sometimes even in suburban streets once we reached the more populated areas.
Our trip can be divided into 3 sections - the scenic west, the south for food & music and the east coast (ie Washington DC & NYC). Click on a photo below to see a detailed account with pictures of that section of the trip.
